Class size: up to 40
Teaching Aids Required: Dynamic Dots and Progress Charts for each student, Stop Watch, basketball, hula hoop, large cushion, frisbee
Student Roles: Group Representatives, Judges
Method:
- Divide the class evenly so that there are 4 groups.
- Explain to the students the objectives of the day is to test and record their ability in a variety of Olympic sports.
- Let students know that for each activity, there will be a representative for their team and a judge to check other teams.
Explain the Events
- Hurdles – safer to set this up on grass and use something soft like a large cushion for the hurdle
- Discus – use a normal frisbees and measure the distance thrown
- Shot Put – you can use a basketball, medicine ball or softball depending on the ability level of your students
- Basketball – how many shots they can sink from a predetermined distance in a set amount of time
- Olympic Rings – have teams hold hands – the idea is to pass a hula hoop through the team without breaking their hand link.
- Relay Race – setup an obstacle course involving all of the above events executed 1 by 1.
Open the Games
- Declare the Games open, light up a little torch if you really want to create the buzz – “Let the Games Begin”
- Have judges from teams monitor each other and if you can, outsource the measuring of times/distances/scores to a responsible student.
- Use the progress chart to award dynamic dot stickers to the top performing students for each events and then the overall winners.
